Usually dogs who are hypoallergenic don’t shed as much fur, therefore, dander and other things that cause allergies get stuck in their fur and cause rashes, scratching and allergies. However, don’t be surprised if you’re told that your dog is hypoallergenic even if they shed like crazy.
A year in with Arty we noticed that he would get a lot of hot spots. Under his armpits, under his legs, his paw, on his tummy. Pretty much anywhere where he could lick. My solution at the time was to put a cone on him and prevent him from licking. But I didn’t want a dog with a permanent cone on him whenever company would come over. So I reached out to his vet, his vet said maybe he’s allergic to something in the house. My thoughts were, nothing, we haven’t changed detergent, carpet cleaner, or anything that would cause this. She prescribed him some antibiotics and gave him a shot of cortisone. This cost us a little under $100. Now, if you have the money and time to take your pet to the vet for this quick fix, go ahead. But, we wanted to find a solution that wasn’t too costly, wouldn’t require a vet visit, and something we could continue to do at home.
Fast forward a few months and the hot spots were back. I had purchased this oatmeal shampoo and thought it would help relieve the itch. But I found myself bathing Arty every-other-day to help relieve some of the discomfort. I thought, is this what I am going to have to do so my dog feels slightly better? I decided to take Arty to the groomers at Petsmart to cut some of his hair off. Now, I’m not sure if you’ve ever taken your dogs to the Petsmart groomers but they usually inspect your dog all around to make sure they don’t have knots, weird rashes, or skin issues. The groomer told me that Arty had a few bumps under his arms. In my head I was like, I know, but please take him. She said that Arty was hypoallergenic. So she recommended using hypoallergenic shampoo on him for his grooming appointment. I said yes! The cost was a little more than their regular shampoo but I was okay paying the extra cost if it meant relieving Arty of some scratches. I asked her what brand she uses so that I can use it on Arty at home.

This shampoo you can find at any pet store. I usually purchase it at Petsmart. It is medicated. Here are the ingredients:

I try to take Arty a bath every 2 weeks. I should probably bathe him more, but I have another dog, and Arty sheds so much hair, I find myself unclogging my bathtub after each bath.
Along with the shampoo I did my own research and bought something else I thought would help Arty.

I use this lysol brand laundry sanitizer whenever I wash Arty’s sheets, beds, and clothes. It’s 0% bleach and kills 99.9% of bacteria. Since Arty goes to the bathroom outside and brings in to the house whatever he steps on, I’m always cautious of things he can bring in like, other dog’s feces, bugs, dirt etc. So, I use this as an extra step to make sure anything he lays on is cleaned.
Every dog is different and I find that Corgi’s are very sensitive dogs. So if you are running out of ideas on what to do, this is just one you can use. Hope this helps! 🙂
