Here are a few tips to get your puppy to sit, stay, or even lay down. Take them to puppy training classes! It will be much easier for you to train your dog when their just a few months old because they are learning everything for the first time at such a young age. We took Arty to our local Petsmart® and we loved it. Sign-up your pup for the puppy training class first. Pros and cons:
Pros: It’s about 4 other dogs in the class so your pup will meet new friends and the teachers are amazing, shoutout to @nicolenarita!
Cons: It says Puppy training but there are in fact dogs of all ages, which I wasn’t too crazy about since it’s called puppy training.
It’s about $115 for a 6 week class 1 hour, 1 day a week. Now, its easy to sign-up and pay, but you actually have to attend the classes with your pup. This isn’t like school where you drop off your kid and hope they learn something new, you have to be just as committed so that you can teach your pup new skills and tricks. I will say that when we first brought Arty home, he would bark for no reason, chew up everything, and run around, (puppy behavior). After the class Arty learned sit, down, and stay. Now, we could have stopped there, but his dad wanted to sign him up for the next class, Intermediate Training. In this class he would learn how to sit and stay with distractions. Meaning, being able to bounce a ball around Arty and having him sit there the whole time. I didn’t think he needed the class but I also liked the first class so much that I thought it was a good idea. Also, Arty’s bestie @kopidoodles was going to be in the class as well, so it was a win, win for us. 🙂
The class was great and Arty graduated a second time, (Yay!) The Intermediate class was the same price with 10% off since we joined the first one. It was also once a week, for 6 weeks, 1 hour each class. I would definitely recommend these classes, especially because Corgi’s are already smart dogs that they pick up things really quick.
A few tips for those thinking of signing their pup’s up for classes, treats will be your best friend. Teaching your pup new tricks will not work unless you have treats in your hands. Practice makes perfect. In this case it does. Do not only practice in the classes but also at home, in different rooms that way your pup listens to all commands all the time. Try different treats that way your pup doesn’t get tired of the same ones. We chose Petsmart but there is also Petco and other dog shops that offer classes. We just chose what was more convenient for us.
Also, if you cannot afford the puppy training classes, that’s okay, you can always Youtube videos about sit, stay, and down. I just felt it was easier for me, Arty and his dad to actually attend the classes and get a better idea of how to do it.
So start training and good luck!
